7th January 2008

3:04pm: Ever fall into really cold water?
January 19, 2008 will mark my seventh time taking "the PLUNGE" in Seward.

The PLUNGE is the keystone event of the Seward Polar Bear Jumpoff Festival the weekend of January 18th, 19th and 20th in Seward, Alaska. The weekend is filled with such madness as Turkey Bowling (exactly what it sounds like), the Waiter/Waitress Competition (a team obstacle course) and an Oyster Slurping Contest with grand parade Saturday morning leading up to the PLUNGE in the early afternoon. 2008 is the 23rd year for the festival and more than 100 jumpers will be going in.

Why would somebody do this? For charity of course. The Seward Polar Bear Jumpoff PLUNGE is a fund raiser for the Alaska Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

A lot of people ask me about going in. IT'S FREAKIN' COLD!!! I'm jumping so you don't have to. Please donate today online with a check card or credit card here: LINK or send me a message and I will give you my address or I can come and pick up a check if you're here in Anchorage.

And in classic chain letter fashion, if you don't forward this to all of your friends within the next 30 minutes I will cry (yeah, probably not as threatening as a chain letter should be but I don't believe in chain letters).

From Today's Anchorage Daily News - Play Section

Dr. Sketchy's BIG WILD LIFE is life drawing as never done before. We don't just sit around and draw. We have interesting models, games and prizes, all in the name of the good Dr. (a notorious figure in the underground art world). Dr. Sketchy's BIG WILD LIFE is the third Sunday of every month from 4pm till 8pm with the first pose at 4:30 sharp. Bring your pens and pencils, crayons and sketch pads and a few dollars to tip the model. Our July model is the phenomenal N'kia! The Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School movement, started in 2005 by Ms. Molly Crabapple in New York City, has blazed it's way around the world with nearly four dozen locations globally.

7:35am: Life drawing meets burlesque
From this morning's Anchorage Daily News

In the film "Art School Confidential," the main character takes a life drawing class that goes from grotesque to exhilarating, depending on the gender of the model. Naked bodies tend to do that to a person, but Dr. Sketchy avoids the snobbery and neuroses by cutting to the chase.

The "Mr. Sketchy" movement began in New York City in 2005 with the perennial question "Why can't drawing naked people be sexy?"

Why not indeed; how about melding life drawing with burlesque, for example, or mix art-making with games, go-go dancing and audience participation? With that in mind, the Alaska incarnation of the art event "Dr. Sketchy's Big Wild Life" poses the second-simplest question: "Why not draw almost-naked people while sipping a Bernie's Bungalow martini or Bloody Mary?

Even goofiness has its place, said Jon Lang, who will include life drawing contests like "the best likeness of a model on a $1,000 bill or the best incorporation of a woodland creature."

Dr.-Sketchy by Lee Post (square)

If all goes well, Lang said, he hopes to do sessions every month. This first one features Danger Mouse of VivaVoom Brr-lesque and takes place from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Paradise Lounge of Bernie's Bungalow (626 D St., 276-8808). The cover charge is $5 for college students with ID, $10 for artists and $20 for anyone who just wants to watch.

Look for details or register by going to www.myspace.com/drsketchysbigwildlife or send a message to beardedjon@gmail.com. The place holds only 65 people, so act quickly or forever hold your peace. A few Mr. Sketchy drawing kits will be available, but it's best to bring your own.
